Shortly after the invention of the printing presses in Europe, it is known that minorities living in the Ottoman Empire established publishing houes. Yusuf Agâh Efendi and İbrahim Müteferrika established the first Turkish publishing house. The first Turkish publishing house to publish in real terms started its publication life in 1727. The first published work was a Turkish-Arabic dictionary called as “Lugat-i Vankuli” and the publication of other works followed it. The first private printing house established was the printing house of the "Ceride-i Havadis" newspaper published in 1840. In 1833 there were 54 publishing houses, in 1948; 509 publishing houses, in 1983; 3537 publishing houses and in 1907 there were almost 6000 publishing houses in country.

The change created by the newly educated intellectuals who mostly went abroad for education in the 18th and 19th centuries accelerated the press and broadcasting life especially in the 19th century. 

Today, Turkish publishing continues to develop by following the technology closely and continues to provide high quality service.
